There are so many fabulous little ways that you, as a photographer, can build your portfolio, gain credibility and NOT GIVE SHOOTS AWAY FOR FREE. I know it is hard when you start out, when you have
so much drive
all you want to do is shoot shoot shoot,
you need those clients,
but to get them you need images to show them.... so what happens....
“I know, I will give my work away for free” for the love of all things good..... STOP IT! PLEASE! You really don’t need to do this at all.
Think about it this way, imagine a Doctor or dentist or surgeon or architect saying, well I am practicing so let me practice on you for free, and you have gone to the doctors with an appendix complaint, who knows, you may land up liver free.... that sounds like fun.
Think about what your reaction and response will be, maybe something like
“Hmmmmmm, I don’t really trust this guy, why would a professional hand out expertise for free?”
The same is true for any professional, to gain credibility, don’t do free, it will hurt you in the long run and here is why.....
You are handing out free shoots left right and centre, “I do it because it is my passion” “I don’t care about the money” that is so awesome, then if you don’t care about the money I would love for you to shoot and then give the earnings to me, pleaseJ
You have to care about the money, and having a passion that can pay your bills and feed you and your family, THAT is living the dream. But it will never happen if you are giving it all away for free, and ask yourself this, if I am giving it away for free, when I do want to charge, how am I suddenly going to make the shift from free to charging?
So how do you do it.....? Read on....
If you absolutely and must and insist on giving it all away, then make it a gift, wait until an appropriate gift giving time and give a gift of a shoot.
Create vouchers that you then can give a value towards your shoot away, for example R200 towards your photo shoot, it adds so much more credibility to you and to your brand, your business and you don’t die of exhaustion trying to make ends meet by giving it all away for free, and if you study consumer psychology, they will appreciate it and value it more doing it this way.
And here you go, here you get to give it away for free, have a competition, then you get to create awareness about you and your brand too...
